The Rothulk
At a glance: the named beached breach-ship grown into the ground · a mountain of rotting host-flesh and dead-world machinery with a heartbeat · a self-contained nest-vertical you climb to ignite its breach-core · lies in Cinder-Flats · this is the level of Rothulk.
It was a ship once. You can still find the parts of it that remember being one — a hull plate the size of a wall, a sealed bulkhead, the long bone of a spar — but they’re load-bearing in something else now, struts in a thing that grew up around them after it stopped flying. The Pyre named it the Rothulk and stopped calling it a wreck, because a wreck doesn’t pull air, and this one does. Stand at the base in Cinder-Flats and you can hear it: a slow wet thud somewhere up in the dark of it, the whole mountain swelling and settling on a count too long for anything that should be alive.
It is a breach turned vertical. Where a Maw goes down, the Rothulk goes up — chambers of pulsing host-flesh stacked on the bones of the dead-world machinery that brought the Scourge here, every level a gut, every gut feeding the one above it. The walls are warm and ribbed and they close when they feel you. Mass-clusters of host glow with Choir-coordination, and while the breach-core is lit they share their sight up and down the spine — so the climb is mostly the work of staying in the gaps between them, out of the signal, picking the route the swarm isn’t looking at.
The top is the whole point. Somewhere near the crown sits the breach-core, the repeater-heart that keeps the hulk connected to the wider mind. Reach it, ignite it, and the connection breaks: the Rothulk goes feral around you, the host-flesh forgets the count it was breathing on, and every cluster you slipped past on the way up turns blind and dumb and starts swinging at the dark. Then you climb back down a collapsing nest ahead of the spawn, with the Choir no longer telling it where you are. That severing is the whole game (CANON §6) — node isolation by burning the repeater from the inside — made into a mountain you climb.
Role in the war
Breach — a single, named, self-contained nest: a crashed breach-ship (CANON §4) rooted into Cinder-Flats and grown into a vertical nest with a breach-core / repeater-heart at its crown. It is the CANON §6 win condition rendered as a level — climb in, ignite the core, sever the local node, and the surrounding horde goes feral. Per The Purge, the kill is local: burning one Rothulk frees one lane; it does not touch the deeper source at Perdition.
Named Threats
- Hull Chorus (provisional — coined for the runtime lore data; promote or rename freely) — the breach-core made guardian: the repeater-heart at the hulk’s crown wearing the voidship itself as a body. It sings the wreck’s defense — every gut, vent, and grafted gun answers it — and goes silent only when the core burns. Runtime data anchors it to Breach-Boss under the voidship host family, named in the Choir’s bell register alongside the Choir repeater classes.
Appears In
- Rothulk — the level is the hulk; the Pyre saboteur platforms up its chambers to reach and ignite the breach-core, then escapes the collapse.
