The Maw

At a glance: the mouth of the descent below the lanes · where the ground opens and the swarm pours up · holds Breach Primus, the throat-shaft down toward Perdition · the span-over-the-throat stage of Scourge-Survivors.

The lanes are where the war is fought. The Maw is where the war comes from.

It is the hole. Somewhere under the lane-floor the ground gave way — not cracked, opened, the way a wound opens when you stop pressing on it — and what came up was the swarm, in numbers that don’t end, climbing a shaft nobody has measured the bottom of. The Pyre charted the top of it and named it Breach Primus: the first throat, the mouth the Scourge feeds the lanes through. Stand at the lip and you can feel the updraft, warm and stinking, the breath of everything below pushing its dead upward into the light to be killed and replaced.

You do not fight the Maw. You cross it. The only way down toward Perdition runs out over the throat itself — a span of fused host-bone and salvaged Warden gantry strung across the dark, every foot of it crawling, the swarm coming up the walls on both sides faster than you can clear them. A Purger named Voss made the crossing twice. The first time he came back grey. The second time the span held and he didn’t, and the last thing his squad heard on the channel was him counting his charges, calm, all the way to zero, and then the updraft eating the sound.

Everything that reaches the lanes climbed out of here first. That’s the thing the recruits don’t understand until they stand on the lip: there is no surface battle, no Deadlane wall, no breach-arena up top that isn’t just the overflow of this. The Maw is the source made into a place you can walk to. Past it the rock turns to throat, and the throat goes down to where the source pulses.

Role in the war

Breach — the mouth of the descent, the shaft the Scourge pours the groundside war up through. It holds Breach Primus, the primary throat below the lanes. In the descent it is the gate stage: the crossing between the surface fight and the deep nest, the way down toward Perdition and the Choir Node. Per Cosmology, breaches are physical entrenched nests, not rifts — the Maw is the most literal nest there is, a hole that vomits horde and cannot be capped, only crossed.

Named Threats

  • Maw Shepherd (provisional — coined for the runtime lore data; promote or rename freely) — the bone-titan host that walks the span. Megafauna rebuilt into a gatekeeper, it herds the climbing swarm up the throat and onto the crossing; killing it is the only way the span stays a bridge instead of a feeding line. Runtime data anchors it to Breach-Boss under the bone-titan host family.
