Ash-Reach

At a glance: Pyre territory downwind of the burns · the road and ground past The-Pyre-Gate, grey under a skin of ash · the Pyre’s deepest forward holding before neutral ground · “Pyre Road” is the lane that runs through it toward the breach.

Past The-Pyre-Gate the wind is always at your back, and it carries the burns with it. Ash-Reach is what that wind builds: a stretch of road and ground the The-Pyre hold downwind of their own fires, where everything wears a skin of grey. Boots, tank-rigs, the dead left where they fell — by the second day it’s all the same colour. Purgers call the lane through it Pyre Road, because that’s the direction the road only goes. You don’t get sent up Ash-Reach toward the wall. You get sent down it, toward the breach.

The ash is the tell that nobody has cleared this ground in a long time, and nobody will. It’s the Pyre’s deepest forward holding before the line frays into neutral ground and then into the Scourge’s, and it’s held the way the Pyre hold anything — thinly, hotly, by people who weren’t planning to leave. A Purger walking it learns to read the drifts: where the ash is thin the ground’s been burned recently and is safe to a point; where it lies deep and undisturbed, something stopped clearing it, and you should be asking why.

It is quiet out here in a way the Gate never is. That’s not peace. That’s distance from the wall, and proximity to the thing the road runs down to meet.

Role in the war

A holdout — the Pyre’s furthest forward holding on the Ashgate descent, the last ground that’s still theirs before it goes neutral and then becomes the Scourge’s. It’s offense ground in transit: not a wall held and not a breach taken, but the burned approach the Pyre keep open so Purgers can reach the source and starve it (see CANON §7; Cosmology). Hold the Reach and the road to the breach stays walkable; lose it and the descent has to be re-bought in fire.
