The Pyre Gate
At a glance: Pyre forward camp + launch gate · just east of Ashgate, outside the Foundry Wards · where Purgers stage, seal up, and burn out before the descent down Pyre Road · the last muster before the breach.
Just east of Ashgate, outside the wall the Wardens won’t quite call theirs, the The-Pyre burns their fuel and their people from the same fires. The Pyre Gate is a camp that never finishes packing: tents over scorched ground, cauterizer tanks racked and topped, ash tabards drying stiff, and the mouth of Pyre Road open at the eastern edge like something waiting to be fed. This is where a Purger stops being a name on a roster and becomes a number on a manifest — kit checked, helmet sealed, told which lane just punched through and how long the relay above expects them to last.
You can hear the Gate before you see it. The burn-off — equipment, the dead, whatever came back wrong — runs day and night, and that’s the ash that drifts up over Ashgate and put the city its name. The Wardens hate the smell from the wall. The Pyre live in it. A muster master once put it to a green Purger plainly: nobody here is coming back the way they left, so stop carrying anything you’d miss.
Then the order comes, the Gate opens, and they go down the road into the burns. The camp re-packs behind them and waits for the next manifest. There is always a next manifest.
Role in the war
A holdout — the Pyre’s forward muster on the Ashgate line, the hinge between the wall and the descent. It is offense staged at a defensive city: the Wardens hold the lanes here, the Pyre launch through them to burn the source (see CANON §7; Cosmology). The Gate itself starves and severs nothing — it is the door, and the line down Pyre Road toward the breach starts at its threshold.
Appears In
- Scourge-Survivors — the muster and launch point; a run begins at the Gate and goes down Pyre Road toward Perdition.
- Pactfall — Purgers waiting on a manifest spend the wait in Ashgate’s arena district; the Gate is where the survivors return to.
