The Cinder Wells

At a glance: Pact-shared furnace district below Ashgate’s Foundry Wards - old thermal wells and induction stacks that charge Warden towers, Beacon cells, Nail cautery cores, and Pyre breach tanks - answers what powers the line without making the Choir a battery (CANON) - appears in Deadlane / Scourge-Survivors / Pactfall.

Every wall wants current. Every Purger wants flame. The Cinder Wells are where both sides come to kneel and pretend they are only filling tanks.

The Wells sit under Ashgate, below the Foundry Wards where the floor is never cool and the air tastes like pennies. Before Zero-Day they were industrial heat: deep thermal taps, induction stacks, slag exchangers, and enough buried cable to make half the city glow. After the fall, the Wardens stopped asking what the system was built for and started asking what it could keep alive. Tower capacitors. Shield anchors. Long-gun breeches. Field batteries for Fork walls. If it held a lane, it drank from the Wells.

Then the Pyre came back from the first descents with empty cauterizer tanks and people still moving inside their armor. The Wardens said the grid could not spare the draw. The Pyre said the line would not exist without the burns under it. The argument lasted until the next breach horn. After that the Wells became Pact ground: Warden meters on one wall, Pyre tank racks on the other, both watched by crews who hate sharing heat and hate dying cold more.

Nothing in the Wells is clean. Fuel convoys come in from Rustmarch with cracked drums and machine oil. Slag pours down from the foundries. Dead Scourge scraped from the outer berm is burned only after it has been rendered inert, and even then the crews hate the smell. Nobody feeds live Scourge into the stacks. That is not fuel. That is a breach with better walls, and every engineer in Ashgate knows the difference (CANON §4-6).

The Wells do not power the Choir and they do not steal from it. The Choir is a physical connection between hosts, roots, cables, hull, and stone, not a generator humans can bottle. The Wells are uglier and more useful than that: old-world heat forced through salvage, ash, copper, bone-conductors, and ceramic cells until the output is steady enough to build a wall around. A Dead-Air-Beacon burns carrier material because a cell from the Wells was charged hot enough to cauterize. A Blackout-Nail cuts a path because its core was filled here. A Pyre pack stays lit one room deeper because somebody below Ashgate gave up enough tower reserve to make that happen.

That is why the Cinder Wells are neutral ground in theory and a knife fight in practice. Wardens count heat in shifts held. Pyre cells count it in meters descended. Under The-Pact, the rule is simple: when a breach opens, the draw goes where it breaks the signal fastest. When the horn stops, the ledgers come out, and everyone remembers what the other side spent.

If Ashgate ever loses the Wells, the city does not fall all at once. It gets quieter first. The tower hum thins. Beacon cells come off the rack half-hot. Purger tanks leave with red paint still wet around the empty marks. The wall keeps standing, because Wardens make a religion of standing. Then the next wave comes in coordinated, the first Nail lands cold, and everyone learns how much of courage was heat.

Role in the war

A holdout infrastructure site inside Ashgate: not a breach, not a lane, and not a secret weapon. The Cinder Wells are the physical power source behind the defensive and offensive gear that lets humans exploit CANON §6. Wardens use the output to keep towers, anchors, Fork walls, and lane batteries alive long enough to fragment the Choir at the edge. Pyre crews use charged cautery tanks and cells to starve hosts, burn carrier material, and sever repeaters from inside the breach. The Wells make local isolation practical; they do not make it permanent.

Appears In

  • Deadlane - generator / resource objective beneath Ashgate’s wall; if the Wells drop, tower overcharge, Beacon uptime, and emergency repairs get shorter.
  • Scourge-Survivors - launch prep for a Pyre operator: cauterizer tanks, coffin-beacons, and hand Nails are filled here before the descent toward Perdition.
  • Pactfall - sanctioned arena pressure point where Pyre and Warden teams fight over heat allotment without breaking The-Pact in the field.
