The Pact

At a glance: Pyre-Warden field compact · every human feud stops the instant a breach opens · keeps rivalry inside sanctioned arenas instead of the field · turns isolation and starvation into shared doctrine · appears in Deadlane / Scourge-Survivors / Pactfall / War-for-the-Lanes.

The Pact is not peace. It is the rule that kept extinction from finishing the argument.

It was sworn after the Schism nearly cost a holdout its walls: Warden guns waiting for orders, Pyre burners sprinting past the line, both sides right about the Scourge and both too proud to move together until the breach was already inside the city. The survivors did not forgive each other. They wrote the only law that mattered on the door of every holdout afterward:

When the wound opens, the argument ends.

The Pact binds rivals, not friends. Wardens still call the Pyre wasteful fanatics. Pyre cells still call the Wardens undertakers with better walls. None of that matters while the breach is active, because CANON is clear about the war: the Scourge is host-dependent, the Choir coordinates through physical reach, and humanity only wins locally by isolating repeaters or starving the front. One doctrine holds the line. One doctrine burns the source. The Pact is the ugly hinge that lets both be true at once.

In practice it is simple. Warden crews keep the lane open, range the repeaters, and hold the extraction clock. Pyre Purgers go through the firebreak, spend themselves in the breach, and kill what the wall cannot reach. Salvage, ammo, medical space, and dead-road priority become shared assets until the sirens end. Command does not merge. Doctrine does not soften. The only question in a breach window is who is closest to breaking the signal.

When the sirens fall quiet, the feud comes back. That is why Pactfall exists: sanctioned violence where the two human answers can bleed each other without breaking the field rule that keeps the species alive. The arena is not hypocrisy. It is pressure relief. Better a duelist carried out under lights than a gate left unopened because two officers hated each other at the wrong second.

The Listeners make the Pact harder. If a Listener is the only one who can hear a repeater shift, a Warden will use the report and a Pyre will still mark the name for trial. The compact protects the breach response, not the heresy. Even the hunted get pulled behind the same wall while the Choir is singing.

The Pact can bend. It can be tested, exploited, and made ugly. It cannot break in the field. If humans are still fighting each other when the Scourge arrives, the Choir does not need to be smarter than them. It only needs to wait.

Field Rules

  • Breach override. Any active breach, lane collapse, or Choir surge suspends Pyre-Warden hostilities until the local front is severed, starved, or evacuated.
  • No field vendetta. Grievances are recorded, not settled, while the sirens are live. Retaliation waits for tribunal, exile, or Pactfall.
  • Shared target logic. Wardens prioritize isolation: walls, chokepoints, repeater ranges, extraction. Pyre prioritize starvation and source-kill: hosts, nests, breach organs, deep repeaters (CANON).
  • No doctrine capture. A Warden cannot order a Pyre cell to stop burning a source. A Pyre cell cannot order a Warden line to abandon a lane. The Pact coordinates objectives; it does not erase factions.
  • Last human standing. If one side is dead or absent, the other inherits the compact’s duty: hold if holding buys time, burn if burning buys time, and open the gate for any human still running.

Stance

  • Vs the Scourge: total human cooperation until the local breach response ends.
  • Vs The-Pyre / The-Wardens: rivalry contained by rules, arenas, and delayed judgment.
  • Vs The-Listeners: tolerated inside a live breach response, hunted or judged after.

Gameplay Read

  • Deadlane: explains why Pyre extraction markers, burn orders, and Purger objectives can appear inside a Warden tower-defense front without turning the factions into allies off-duty.
  • Scourge-Survivors: explains why a lone Pyre operator can receive Warden lane timing, Tuning-Fork ranges, and extraction windows during a purge.
  • Pactfall: the central tension. Human teams can fight hard because the arena is where the feud is allowed to spend itself; a Scourge surge forces the rule back into play.
  • War-for-the-Lanes: the persistent map’s political glue. Territory can be Pyre-leaning or Warden-held, but a live breach creates temporary cooperation before the front changes hands again.
