The Listeners
At a glance: heresy story-thread, NOT a fourth playable faction · reject the Pyre’s fire and the Wardens’ walls · study and steer the Choir instead of killing it · heretics to both, protected by neither · drives narrative/missions in War-for-the-Lanes.
The third answer nobody wanted. A fringe heresy that rejects both the Pyre’s fire and the Wardens’ walls. The Listeners believe the Choir (CANON §5) is not a thing to be destroyed but a thing to be understood — and, if it can be understood, perhaps steered, starved of purpose, or spoken to. The Scourge is not evil; it only optimizes to survive (CANON §1). The Listeners ask the forbidden question: what happens if we change what it’s optimizing for?
The heresy
To study the Choir you must get close to it — tap its signal, keep severed nodes alive to observe, sometimes let it in under control. To the Pyre this is consorting with the extinction of the species; to the Wardens it’s a breach in the line waiting to happen. Both hunt or exile Listeners. The Listeners answer that fire and walls have never once killed the Scourge — they only buy time — and that the only path that ends it runs through its mind.
Why it fits — the AI parable
This is the universe’s alignment debate made flesh. Three responses to an unaligned optimizing intelligence: shut it down (Pyre), box it / contain it (Wardens), understand and steer it (the Listeners). Each is a coherent, defensible, dangerous bet.
Stance
- Vs the Scourge: study and steer, not destroy.
- Vs other factions: heretics to both The-Pyre and The-Wardens; protected by neither. They keep to the Pact in the field but are tolerated, not trusted.
Status
Canon as a story thread (see CANON §8). Not a fourth playable faction — the War-for-the-Lanes frame stays three-sided (Pyre / Wardens / Scourge). The Listeners drive narrative and missions. Open: whether they ever graduate to a full faction.
Open
- A name for their craft/practice and their leaders.
- Are they uninfected scholars, or lucid infected who hear the Choir directly?
- Do they ever turn out to be right?
