Chorister

At a glance: Scourge rooted Choir-repeater · Mycelial Spore Host relay that extends the Choir past its natural radius · priority objective; destroy it and the local swarm goes feral · appears in Deadlane / Scourge-Survivors / The-Listeners.

A named Choir-repeater — the physical node the Scourge grows to carry its hive signal past its natural radius. It does not fight so much as sing: a rooted, throat-heavy relay organism that broadcasts the Choir (CANON §5–6) to every Scourge around it, so the horde in its range stays coordinated, near-omniscient, and sharing one set of eyes. The Scourge cannot mass densely enough to think across a whole front on its own — Choristers are how the connection reaches. Kill the Chorister and you kill the signal: the local node is severed from the Choir and the swarm around it goes feral. This is the human win condition made flesh.

Behaviour

  • Semi-stationary. Roots into the ground near a breach or astride a lane and anchors there; relocates only slowly, dragging its tendrils, and never willingly.
  • While it lives, every Scourge in its radius is connected: units flank, focus-fire, pre-empt the player’s movement, and react as one mind. Pull a Ripper out of cover and three more cover the angle. The Chorister is why.
  • Barely attacks on its own — it is defended by the horde it empowers. Its only direct threat is a close-range resonance burst that staggers and briefly scrambles attacker targeting.
  • On death the local node is severed. Every connected Scourge in range drops to feral (CANON §6): still lethal, but blind, dumb, instinct-only — no shared sight, no coordination. The swarm scatters from a tide into a panic.
  • The Scourge defends a Chorister fanatically; it will throw bodies it would never otherwise spend to keep one singing. Losing one blinds an entire front, so it never gives one up cheap.
  • Killing a Chorister does not kill the Scourge — the wider Choir persists and re-roots elsewhere (CANON §2). You sever a node and win the fight; you do not win the war.

Gameplay Read

  • A priority target and objective, not a pressure unit — the thing the whole encounter is built around reaching and breaking.
  • Telegraph: a slow toxic-green resonance pulse radiates out from the Chorister, and you can see nearby units flinch and snap in sync with each beat — the visual grammar of “these are connected.”
  • The moment it dies, the surrounding horde visibly changes behaviour: tracking goes loose, units wander, flanking collapses. The severance is readable at a glance, no UI needed.
  • Heavily screened; the intended challenge is fighting through the coordinated swarm to the relay, then surviving the feral remnant.

Visual Motifs

  • A rooted relay-organism grown tall — a fused mast of bone, black chitin, and stretched host cartilage, more Mycelial Spore Host than warrior: fibrous, swollen, breathing.
  • Clustered throat-sacs and resonator membranes along its length — open, wet, singing mouths with no faces, pulsing in time with the broadcast.
  • Toxic-green Choir nodes laddered up the spine, brightest at the crown; the signal-emitter.
  • Mycelial filaments and tendrils webbing out from its base across the ground, threading into every host body nearby — the network you can literally see.
  • Anchored into a breach core or the earth by a knot of roots; clearly something that was planted, not something that walks.

Sprite Brief

  • Views: front, side, back.
  • Reads as a structure/relay even at lane distance — tall, rooted, asymmetric; never mistakable for an infantry charger.
  • Crown and throat-sacs are the focal point: the “where do I shoot” answer is the brightest Choir node.
  • Pulse state: an emitting variant with crown and sacs flared blood-hot-to-toxic, tendrils taut.
  • Must read in both Deadlane’s lane-top camera and Scourge-Survivors’s close FPS framing.

Prompt Seed

Scourge Choir-repeater relay organism, rooted mycelial-spore host grown into a tall fused mast of bone and black chitin, clustered wet singing throat-sacs and resonator membranes with no faces, toxic-green Choir nodes laddered up the spine brightest at the crown, mycelial tendrils webbing across the ground into nearby host bodies, anchored into a breach core by a knot of roots, broadcasting a resonance pulse, blood and rust and gunmetal, DOOM-like heavy shadows, no neon.

Appears In

  • Deadlane — a relay planted on a held lane: while it sings, waves attack as a coordinated push; destroy it and the lane’s Scourge falls into feral disorder. A Warden objective and turning point.
  • Scourge-Survivors — the Purge objective deep in a breach (Perdition): a lone Pyre Purger fights through the connected swarm to sever the node from the inside.
  • The-Listeners — the organ the heresy covets. A severed-but-living Chorister is exactly the node they keep alive and listen to (CANON §8) — the closest thing to a captured ear on the Choir.
