Braid-Worm

At a glance: Mycelial Spore Host carrier-weaver - lays wet bridge-tissue across broken roots, cables, corpses, and dead-air scars so nearby repeaters can route the Choir again - not a repeater and not intelligent by itself - counter is fire, severance, and clean ground - appears in Deadlane / Redline / Scourge-Survivors.

A Dead-Air-Beacon buys silence by burning the path.

A Braid-Worm is what the Scourge spends to stitch the path shut.

It is not a singer. It has no crown-node, no shared sight, no cleverness of its own. A Braid-Worm is only a long, pale, gut-heavy host that crawls along wounds in the world and leaves usable body behind it: braided root, mucus cable, tendon rope, and spore-thread hardened around whatever the Choir can wear. Stone crack. Dead handset wire. Fresh corpse. Old pylon gut. If it can carry pressure, heat, blood, or signal, the worm can make it part of the road back to the song.

That distinction is why Warden manuals mark it in red twice. Killing a Chorister or Cantor severs a node from the Choir. Killing a Braid-Worm does not. It was never the node. It is the bridge the next node will use.

Leave one alive after a good Blackout-Nail hit and the silence starts to grow a seam. At first it is only a green twitch at the edge of the ash. Then a tendon crosses. Then a cable that should be dead rings once under the skin. Then the pack that went feral a minute ago all turn their heads at the same time, because a real repeater found the braid and the Choir got a road again.

The Braid-Worm does not understand victory. It does not understand repair. It only crawls toward the break and makes a body there. The horror is not that it wants the line back. The horror is that wanting is unnecessary.

Behaviour

  • Weaves carrier, not command. A Braid-Worm lays physical carrier tissue through broken root bundles, cable runs, corpse piles, wet stone, and breach tendon. It carries no Choir node and does not coordinate nearby Scourge by itself.
  • Reconnects only when something sings. If one end of the braid touches a live Chorister, Cantor, Carillon, or other repeater path, the Choir can route through the new tissue. If no connected node reaches it, the braid is just meat on the ground.
  • Targets fresh cuts. It is drawn to Nail wounds, Beacon ash-rings, collapsed pylons, severed tendrils, dropped spans, and places where the signal recently went quiet. It follows the carrier edge because the break is the resource.
  • Keeps crawling when severed. Cut the local repeater and the worm goes feral with the rest of the pocket (CANON), but it still braids. Instinct is enough to cross a gap badly. The result may not reconnect cleanly, but it can make the next reconnection faster.
  • Fragile while stretched. Coiled, it is a tough wet knot. While bridging a gap, its body thins into exposed strands. Fire, cautery, clean demolition, or a second Nail through the strand can cut the work before it hardens.
  • Makes dead air temporary. It is the field answer to Beacon play. A Beacon can hold a wound open for minutes; a Braid-Worm is the thing spending those minutes trying to make the wound close.

Gameplay Read

  • A medium support target for reconnection pressure. It does not hit hard and it does not make the horde smart on spawn; it makes smartness come back unless the player keeps the cut clean.
  • Telegraph: long pale body dragging a wet braid behind it, toxic-green pulse testing the strand from the connected side, ash hissing where new tissue touches a Beacon ring.
  • Counter-play is maintenance under fire: burn the strand, keep corpses and cable stubs out of the dead-air pocket, kill the worm while it is stretched, or refresh the Beacon before the braid hardens.
  • Differentiation: unlike Chorister, Cantor, Quaver, or Carillon, it is not a Choir-repeater. Unlike Sower or Gristle-Vat, it does not create hosts. Its job is smaller and nastier: make isolation expire.

Visual Motifs

  • A long Mycelial Spore Host built like a gut and a cable spool: pale tendon body, black chitin clamps, wet root-hooks, and a blunt boring head with no eyes.
  • Braided carrier-tissue extruding from the tail in three visible materials: mucus cable, fibrous root, and thin host-tendon wrapped around stolen wire or bone.
  • Small toxic-green test pulses crawling along the braid, never a bright crown-node. The glow reads as borrowed signal touching the strand, not a mind inside the worm.
  • A swollen mid-body full of spore-thread and slurry, exposed when the worm stretches across a gap. This is the weak point and the “shoot here” read.
  • Fire-scarred variants should show cauterized ends, glassed-over ash, and strands trying to split around the burn instead of pushing through it cleanly.

Sprite Brief

  • Views: front, side, back.
  • Silhouette must read as long low weaver with a trailing braid, distinct from the low hunter read of Swarm-Ripper and the double-sac shape of Spore-Lung.
  • Bridge state: body stretched thin across a gap, tail extruding a taut three-strand braid, weak mid-body exposed.
  • Cut state: braid severed and curling back, toxic-green pulse dying at the ash edge.
  • Must stay readable in Deadlane high camera, Redline side-on speed framing, and Scourge-Survivors close FPS framing.

Prompt Seed

Scourge carrier-weaver creature, mycelial spore host shaped like a long pale gut-worm and cable spool, blunt eyeless boring head, black chitin clamps and wet root-hooks, trailing braided carrier-tissue made of mucus cable fibrous root and host-tendon wrapped around stolen wire and bone, small toxic-green test pulses crawling along the braid but no crown node, swollen mid-body full of spore-thread slurry exposed as weak point, fire-scarred cauterized strand ends, blood and rust and gunmetal, DOOM-like heavy shadows, no neon.

Appears In

  • Deadlane - a reconnection unit that crawls toward a freshly cut lane carrier after a Blackout-Nail and tries to braid through the Beacon ring before the Warden crew can rebuild.
  • Redline - a road hazard that stitches broken Carillon cable back across a sprint route; the courier has to cut the strand at speed or the next junction starts predicting again.
  • Scourge-Survivors - a breach-room support creature in Perdition that makes a severed extraction path begin to sing again unless the Pyre operator burns the strand and keeps moving.
