Tuning Fork
At a glance: Pact-shared field tech · a passive receiver that hears the Choir and ranges its repeaters · finds the node you have to sever (CANON §6) · appears in Deadlane / Scourge-Survivors / Starblight.
You cannot sever what you cannot find. The Scourge’s one weakness is isolation — kill its repeaters or push a node past the edge of its radius and the local horde drops to feral (CANON §6) — but the repeaters do not stand in the open. A Chorister hides behind the swarm it empowers; a Cantor runs buried in the pack; a Descant sits behind an escort screen; a Bourdon is sunk in the rock. The horde is the wall around the thing worth killing. The Tuning Fork is how humanity sees through it.
It is a passive receiver — old-world signals gear, salvaged and re-grown after Zero-Day — that catches the carrier the Choir broadcasts on (CANON §5) and rings toward its loudest source: the nearest repeater. A forked resonator of gunmetal and bone-conductor hums in the carrier’s hand, faint and far off, building to a skull-deep toll when it points true. Where the ring falls to nothing, you’ve found the edge of the radius — the dead air where a node can be pushed beyond the Choir and severed without ever landing a blow. It does not jam the signal and it does not cut it. It only tells you where the wound is. The killing is still yours to do, still through the swarm, still up close — which is the whole point (CANON §6). The Fork buys you the target; it never buys you the win.
It is the rare thing both orders carry. The Fork predates The Schism — it was already in the old armories when the Pyre broke from the Wardens — so under The Pact both run the same rig. Wardens mount heavy fixed Forks on the wall to range a lane before a wave commits (Deadlane); Pyre Purgers carry a gutted hand unit into the breach, hunting the toll down the dark toward the node (Scourge-Survivors / Perdition).
The cost
To range the Choir you have to listen to it, and the Choir is a hive mind singing with the voices of every world it has eaten (CANON §2). Operators on long Fork duty bleed from the ears, lose sleep, and start finishing the sentences of the dead. The Wardens rotate listeners hard and burn out the ones who linger; the Pyre treat a Fork operator who hears too clearly as already lost. This is the crack the The-Listeners widen into a creed: the Fork only ranges the song to kill it faster — the heresy asks what the song is saying, and tries to answer back (CANON §8). Same signal, same gear, one short step from a targeting tool to a conversation nobody sanctioned.
Gameplay Read
- A detection / objective-marker layer, not a weapon. The Fork surfaces the repeater the encounter is built around reaching — diegetic, no floating UI: a directional rising tone and a rumble that peaks pointed at the node.
- Reads “hot/cold” and directional: louder toward the repeater, dead at the radius edge. The skill is triangulating and pushing in, then fighting through the coordinated swarm to the node.
- Falls deaf in dense swarm-noise — packed Scourge drown the carrier, so the Fork is least use exactly where the horde is thickest. You earn the range; you don’t get it free.
- Cross-front consistency: it’s why a Deadlane crew can prioritise the Cantor in a wave, why a Purger can find the Bourdon in the deep, and why a Starblight pilot can pick the Descant out of the escort screen. One tool, one win condition, every game.
Sprite / Item Brief
- A forked resonator rod — gunmetal tines wrapped in salvaged old-world wiring, a host-bone conductor lashed into the haft where the parasite carrier couples best. Field-grim, riveted, not clean tech.
- Toxic-green is the signal it catches, never the device: a single sickly node glows in the fork’s throat brighter as it nears a repeater — Scourge-only colour (Style-Bible) bleeding into a human tool, the one green light a human is allowed to hold.
- Heavy Warden wall-mount variant (braced, multi-tined, crewed) and a gutted Pyre hand variant (stripped, taped, one-hand, carried into the dark).
Prompt Seed
DOOM-grim handheld signals device, a forked resonator rod of riveted gunmetal tines wrapped in salvaged old-world wiring with a host-bone conductor lashed into the haft, a single sickly toxic-green node glowing in the fork’s throat, blood and rust and scorched metal, heavy shadows, gritty military field-tech, no neon, single object on near-black background.
Appears in
- Deadlane — fixed Warden wall-Forks range a lane before a wave commits, marking the repeater (Chorister / Cantor) so the crew knows which node to break to send the wave feral.
- Scourge-Survivors — a Pyre Purger’s hand unit tolling down the dark toward the Chorister / Bourdon deep in Perdition; the deeper you go, the louder it sings and the more it costs to keep listening.
- Starblight — pilot-rig tuned up the gravity well to pick the Descant out of its escort screen, the high node to sever to blind the falling wave.
