The Hollow Lanes
At a glance: the dead roads between holdouts after the Scourge cut the lanes · collapsing chokepoints, breach-flooded streets, Choir-repeater jammers · contested, held by no one · the theater of Redline (the courier run) · a mid-descent corridor in Scourge-Survivors.
There used to be names for these streets. Now there’s just the number of a holdout at each end and the distance between them, and most runners don’t say the distance out loud.
The Hollow Lanes are what’s left of the roads after the Scourge took the comms. When the wired relays went dark the holdouts stopped being a network and started being a list of places that couldn’t hear each other, and the corridors between them filled with everything that wanted them dead. The asphalt grows chitin now. Spore-walls bloom across a junction overnight and seal it like a scab. Whole blocks have dropped into the breach-flooded undertunnels, so a lane that ran clean last week ends this week in black water and a smell you taste for days.
What makes the Lanes hollow isn’t the empty buildings. It’s the jamming. The Scourge seeds the corridors with repeater-pylons — squat, dripping things rooted through the road — and inside their radius the Choir hears everything and routes the horde to meet you before you’ve decided to move. A courier learns to read the dead air. Where the static thickens, the swarm already knows you’re coming.
A Warden signals officer at Holdout Nine timed it once: from the moment a runner crossed into pylon range to the moment the lane closed behind them, the Choir needed about ninety seconds to wall both ends. Anything slower than ninety seconds doesn’t come back. They don’t post the figure. The runners worked it out on their own, the way you work out which ice holds your weight.
Nobody holds the Hollow Lanes. You cross them, or you don’t.
Role in the war
A Lane front, in the Cosmology sense — a traversable corridor between breaches and holdouts — but a lane the war never managed to hold. Where Deadlane’s Wardens fortify a chokepoint and bleed the Choir at the wall, the Hollow Lanes are the chokepoints that fell: severed, flooded, pylon-seeded, contested by passage alone. Crossing one is the CANON §6 win condition run as a footrace — outpace the signal, or be cut off and severed yourself. A severed holdout is a dead holdout, so the Lanes still have to be run.

Named Threats
- Junction Knell (provisional — coined for the runtime lore data; promote or rename freely) — a machine-graft repeater-mass grown through the road grid at a major junction. When it tolls, both ends of the road wall shut inside the ninety-second window — it is the jamming, given a body. Couriers route around it; killing it opens the junction for a season. Runtime data anchors it to Breach-Boss under the machine-graft host family, named in the Choir’s bell register.
Appears In
- Redline — the entire theater; the lanes-as-racecourses the courier sprints between holdouts, blowing past or smashing the repeater-pylons to break the Choir’s lock.
- Scourge-Survivors — a mid-descent corridor; the Pyre operator pushes through the Hollow Lanes on the way toward the breaches and Perdition.
